Saturday Photo Hunt - The theme is "Five"

A couple of weeks ago, our school had a group of kids from
Romania come visit. They were part of a folklore group travelling around Europe. These sweet kids sang and danced songs from their homeland.
After they left, I looked their town up and discovered that
Unicef has determined the areas surrounding their little village was/is an environmental disaster area.
Here's what I read at Google Earth.
The environmentally damaged area covers hundreds of square kilometres of land. The main industries in Copsa Mica are non-ferrous metalworking and chemical processing plants, and their effect on the environment has been devastating. Air pollution by heavy metals is 600 times the allowed levels. To make matters worse, a lead-smelting facility emitted fumes containing sulfur dioxide, lead, cadmium, and zinc over the town and surrounding area for 50 km² (19 square miles). The entire town and much of the surrounding area were covered with a blanket of black soot daily until the facilities were forced to close in 1993.
I think it's about time that we put children and the environment first and industry second - don't you?
Happy Weekend

Great picture LB!! And your concern for the area is overwhelmingly true in so many areas of the world.

I love the photo and what a wonderful contribution to the hunt. It is sad to think what these children have to grow up with and wonder how their lives will be changed and how much less they will live because of it.

Thanks for visiting mine.

Such a wonderful picture of these kids. And what a terrible place to grow up... yes, something should happen quickly. Our children are our future.
Happys saturday !!

What a wonderful experience for these children -- and for yours! It sounds like the government agrees on this issue and are taking steps to improve things! Of course, it didn't get that way overnight and it will take time to make a comeback too.

Lovely photo. :) So sad about the environmental damage where they live. :( It's tragic that people have to live in an area like that.

That's a great cultural song and dance number. I'm sure everyone enjoyed it.

Environmental problems is a sad reality. I hope that more efforts will be given to help rehabilitate the environment.

It is so sad that people think of their industrial progress over their people especially their children!! I am glad that they got to come here to see our world. So many people are told that we here in the USA are so bad!! Nice to show them that we are not like we are portrayed!! Thanks for visiting me. Sandy

Great Photo, so sad about their homeland! We should always put children first no matter what, but the sad reality is often times money comes first :( enough to make one sick!
