Saturday Photo Hunt - The Theme is "Smelly"

In the late 50's the local "Poorhouse" in our town closed down.
It is now a museum and looking at this picture, you
can almost smell the stench of many poor people living
together. They had workshops and a schoolroom for the children.
I think they took a bath once a week, which can give you an idea
of what it must have smelt like. This was not the worst poorhouse I've
heard about. Some of the poorhouses in Victorian London were much, much
worse!
This picture is the sink in one of the bathrooms.
Happy Weekend

I'm glad they closed it. It was humiliating and degrading! Nothing like punishing people for being poor.

How sad! It's a shame the people of the world let this kinda thing happen without reaching out and helping one another. To have them have to live like this? Wow. *shaking head*

I really couldn't remember there being a "poorhouse" here in Fort Worth and I was born here a LONG time ago. I googled it and couldn't find anything about us ever having one. We do have a ferderal drug rehab place that's been here since 1929. My grandmother worked there in the '50s in the cafeteria. She made friends with some of the men in there. It was sort of a prison, I think. One painted a copy of Van Gogh's Starry Night. She was very pround of it and hung it in the living room of her home. It actually was very good. He was oriental. I met him once or twice when she took me to work with her.

We now have a pub called The Pour House.

Very sad to read about, and I imagine it was a very smelly place to live. The sink looks horrible! Thanks for stopping by Pollywog Creek and commenting on the smelly photos there! Have a great week.

The people who lived in the poor house would have had to put up with unbearable conditions. Very sad indeed.

I hate those types of faucets as well, too hot or too cold. Great shot!
